Vipassana Research Institute (VRI), a non-profit organization, was founded in 1985 with the principal objective of conducting scientific research on the origins and applications of the Vipassana Meditation Technique.
This technique involves observing and exploring mind-body phenomena, leading to mental purification and the potential for significant transformation in an individual's attitudes and behaviors, which can subsequently positively impact society. It offers a unique opportunity to enhance education, healthcare, organizational development, management practices, and social dynamics while promoting secularism, national unity, and international understanding.
At times, we all encounter distress, frustration, and discord. Unfortunately, such suffering often extends beyond ourselves and affects those around us. This is not conducive to a harmonious existence. As social beings, the desire to live peacefully within ourselves and with others is universal. Vipassana facilitates this harmony through mental purification, alleviating suffering at its roots and guiding practitioners towards profound spiritual liberation.
The revival of Vipassana after a hiatus of over 2500 years underscores its enduring significance. Although Vipassana meditation courses commenced in India in 1969, the absence of a dedicated institution for exploring its theoretical foundations was apparent. The necessity for such an establishment was recognized during Mr. S. N. Goenka's teachings of the Satipatthāna Sutta—a discourse where the Buddha elucidates the Vipassana technique systematically.
Through these teachings, Goenkaji observed that students who combined theoretical study (pariyatti) with practical application in meditation (patipatti) experienced enhanced understanding and practice, leading to their desire for deeper exploration. Thus, the inception of the Vipassana Research Institute provided an avenue for further scholarly pursuit.
For decades, Goenkaji's teachings have inspired countless individuals to delve into Vipassana meditation deeply, resulting in spiritual growth and transformation. This initiative strives to globally disseminate Vipassana Meditation guidance and resources to ensure that individuals worldwide can benefit from this profound technique.
